ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
MULTICOM welcomes applicants with a strong background in language, communication and thought who want to develop their skills in multimodal communication and data science. Previous training specifically in multimodality is welcome but is not required.
All application documents must be in English or accompanied by an official English translation.

You must hold one of the following qualifications from a recognized university:
- A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent qualification, equivalent to at least 180 ECTS over three years.

You must demonstrate at least ONE of the following:
- Undergraduate training equivalent to at least 30 ECTS in relevant subject areas, completed by the registration date.
- A master’s degree of at least 60 ECTS in one or more relevant subject areas.
- At least three years of professional experience in a role where language or multimodal communication is central.
Relevant areas include general and theoretical linguistics, philosophy of language, psycholinguistics and psychology of language, language acquisition, bilingualism and second language acquisition, applied linguistics, cognitive science and communication studies directly related to language, cognitive linguistics, phonetics and phonology, semantics, pragmatics, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, sign language, corpus and computational linguistics, language and intercultural communication, and multimodal communication.
What to submit: academic records documenting your relevant training. If you rely on professional experience to meet this requirement, provide a statement of no more than one page, together with supporting documentation.
03. Quantitative background
You must demonstrate basic quantitative skills, showing at least some relevant experience working with data. Evidence for this may include:
- Introductory undergraduate or postgraduate statistics courses equivalent to at least 5 ECTS.
- Quantitative training in another relevant area, such as computational linguistics, psycholinguistics or sociolinguistics, or through a bachelor’s thesis.
- Equivalent quantitative skills acquired in a professional role.
What to submit: relevant academic records or, for professional experience, a statement describing your quantitative work and supporting documentation.
Applicants with an excellent background in language, communication and thought who cannot sufficiently document their quantitative skills may be offered admission conditional on completing designated online training.
04. English proficiency
You must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following three routes.
Route 1: An accepted English language certificate
| Language test provider | C1-C2, CEFR |
|---|---|
| UNIcert level | UNIcert III |
| TOEFL | 105 iBT, 230 CBT, 570 PBT. TOEFL iBT Home Edition is not accepted. |

| GMAT | 570 |
| TELC | TELC English C2, TELC English C2 Business, TELC English C2 University |
Your English language certificate must be valid on the date you submit your application. Expired certificates are not accepted.
What to submit: a copy of your accepted certificate showing the result and the dates needed to establish its validity.
Route 2: A university degree taught in English in an accepted country
A bachelor’s or master’s degree taught in English and studied on campus at a recognized university in one of the following countries only:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Ireland
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Singapore
The university must appear in the Anabin institution database.
This list is exhaustive. A degree taught in English in any other country does not meet this English proficiency route.
A Medium of Instruction (MOI) statement confirming that a degree was taught in English is not accepted as proof of English proficiency if the degree was studied in a country outside this list.
What to submit: your degree documentation and evidence that the program was taught in English and studied on campus in one of the seven accepted countries.
Route 3: Professional experience in English
At least five years of professional experience in an exclusively English-speaking environment, with demonstrated use of speaking, writing, listening and reading.
What to submit: a statement describing your experience, together with supporting documentation demonstrating your use of all four language skills.
CV and video presentation
Alongside the documents supporting your eligibility, submit:
- A CV of no more than two pages. Highlight achievements and experience relevant to MULTICOM, focusing on information not already covered by your other documents.
- A video presentation of no more than 90 seconds. Explain why you want to join MULTICOM, how your background prepares you for the program and what you would contribute to its community.
Submit your application
Applications must be submitted through the MULTICOM application platform within the application period.
Applications are not accepted by email. Sending documents to the MULTICOM contact address does not constitute an application.
The online form saves your progress, so you can prepare your application over several sessions.
Before submitting, check that:
- You have completed all required sections and included the supporting documents relevant to your application.
- Your documents are in English or accompanied by official English translations.
- If you are using an English language certificate, it is accepted and valid on the date of submission.
- If your degree is still in progress, you have provided evidence of expected completion by June 2027.
You only need to submit one application. There is no separate application for scholarships: all admitted applicants are automatically considered.
Selection Criteria
Selection Criteria
Admission is based on merit, suitability for the program and international diversity. Eligible applications are assessed against five criteria.
01. Motivation, commitment and independence
We consider your understanding of the program, your reasons for applying and your potential contribution to the MULTICOM community. Your achievements should demonstrate commitment, initiative, leadership and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary, international environment, taking account of your career stage.
02. Background in language, communication and thought
We assess the breadth, relevance and quality of your academic training and, where applicable, your professional experience.
Previous coursework in multimodal communication is valued, but applicants with an outstanding background in language and thought can be excellent candidates without prior training in multimodality.
03. Academic and professional excellence
We consider your overall academic performance, distinctions and other evidence of achievement within your educational context.
For applicants with substantial professional experience, we also consider evidence of distinction, such as competitive appointments, recognized performance and significant professional achievements.
04. Quantitative skills
We assess the quality of your quantitative training, up to the minimum required to complete MULTICOM successfully. For selection purposes, training beyond the equivalent of two undergraduate courses does not receive additional credit.
MULTICOM is designed to develop multimodality and data science skills in applicants who already have a strong foundation in language, communication and thought. A strong technical background does not replace this foundation.
After admission, students with quantitative training beyond the first-term requirements may be exempted from the Term 1 statistics courses and required to undertake guided study in relevant areas of language, communication and thought.
05. International and intercultural experience
International mobility and intercultural collaboration are valued but are not required. They may help distinguish between otherwise equally strong applications.
Scholarships
Scholarships
All admitted applicants are automatically considered for a scholarship. No separate scholarship application is required.
Scholarship consideration does not guarantee an award. Depending on their ranking and the funding available, admitted applicants may receive:
- A full Erasmus Mundus scholarship covering program costs and providing a monthly stipend.
- An offer of admission without financial support.
Applicants receiving no funding must demonstrate that they can cover the remaining program and living costs.
Funding allocation is based on merit and international diversity. Under the published Erasmus Mundus nationality rule, no more than 10% of scholarships awarded over the project implementation period should go to applicants of the same nationality. Where applicable, scholarships for targeted world regions are exempt from this limit.
For funding options, fees and estimated living costs, visit Costs and Financial Aid.
Inclusion
Inclusion
MULTICOM welcomes qualified applicants with disabilities or additional support needs. Applications are assessed on their merits, and the program seeks international diversity among both scholarship holders and other admitted students.
If you require support, inform the administrative coordinator when applying. Admitted students can receive assistance from the three partner universities and the MULTICOM team. Appropriate support measures and, where applicable, additional funding may be available to facilitate participation.
Appeals & Privacy
Appeals & Privacy
Appeals
Applicants who are not admitted may appeal the decision through the Secretaría of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Murcia.
Personal data
The European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) processes certain applicant data as part of the administration of Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters. This includes data relating to scholarship holders and students without scholarships, in accordance with the applicable EACEA privacy statement.
