Admission Criteria

Criteria for admission and funding allocation will be based on merit and international diversity

These are the criteria for selection. For admission requirements and their supporting documents, go to How to apply

CRITERIA

CRITERIA

01. Leadership, commitment, autonomy and motivation

You are intrinsically motivated and have a sufficiently mature understanding of what the program can offer you and of what you can contribute to the MULTICOM community. Through achievements commensurate with your age and career stage, you show leadership, commitment, autonomy, and the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary and international environment.

02. Language, communication, and thought background

Based on transcript of records, amount, and quality of the training for the relevant area contents (see How to apply). Courses directly related to multimodal communication will be appreciated, but no previous multimodality-related training is required to be considered an excellent candidate, provided that the applicant has an outstanding background in the study of language and thought. Professional experience of demonstrable quality and of specific relevance to the area background will be assessed on an individual basis.

03. Academic/professional excellence

Overall grades and other standard indicators of academic distinction, beyond the specific grades in the relevant areas: class valedictorian, top tier of promotion, graduation from prestigious programs, and similar distinctions, depending on the university system. For candidates with substantial professional experience, indicators of overall quality and distinction: highly competitive selection process, certified top performance, or any other significant achievements commensurate with their career stage, beyond their experience in relevant areas for multimodal data science.

04. Quantitative background

Based on transcript of records, amount, and quality of the training. Excellence in quantitative skills will be rewarded, but training beyond the equivalent to two undergraduate courses will not be considered for applicant selection. While applicants with a stronger quantitative background are encouraged to apply, they should bear in mind that MULTICOM is designed to provide training on multimodality and its related data science to strong profiles in language, communication, and thought. MULTICOM is not designed to provide Humanities training on language, communication, and thought for technical or quantitative profiles. Upon admission, students with quantitative training beyond the requirements of the first term may be waived the statistics courses of Term 1 and be required to strengthen their background in language, communication, and thought by taking a course of guided study in the most relevant areas for each individual.

05. International experience

Although not required, international mobility and intercultural collaboration will be regarded as a factor increasing the likelihood of success in the MULTICOM environment. This criterion can be used to prioritize between applicants that are otherwise deemed to be equally excellent.

Diversity

Admission to MULTICOM is based solely on academic merit, adequacy to the program, and international diversity. According to Erasmus Mundus regulations, no more than 10% of the total number of scholarships awarded during project implementation should go to candidates from the same nationality (this rule does not apply to top up scholarships for targeted regions of the world, if applicable). MULTICOM is committed to seek a nationality balance also for students not supported by an Erasmus scholarship.

MULTICOM also commits to develop a state-of-the-art program in the inclusion of individuals with long-term impairments or disabilities of any kind, and to promote awareness of equality and inclusiveness in the professionals who will be developing the next generation of multimodal technologies and educational resources, as well as critically influencing our understanding of language and thought.

As a result, qualified candidates with disabilities or special needs are particularly encouraged to apply. Their applications will be evaluated exclusively on the basis of their merits and, if admitted, they will be supported by the relevant services of the three universities, the MULTICOM team, and a dedicated budget from the Erasmus Mundus grant.

Application & admission

Candidates will apply separately for admission and for financial aid. They will first be ranked according to their merit and independently from their request for financial support. Then, according to their ranking and the available resources, selected candidates will be made an offer for either:

  • a full Erasmus Mundus fellowship (full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend sufficient to cover all expenses associated with the program)
  • a partial support offer, covering only some of the costs, e.g. tuition, in which case they will be required to provide proof of enough funds to cover all other expenses associated with the program
  • admission with no financial support, in which case they will be required to provide proof of enough funds to cover the fees and all other expenses associated with the program
