Murcia

Murcia, a student’s city: a quality of life found only in our part of the Mediterranean

Located in south-east Spain, the city of Murcia is indeed well-placed. With almost half a million inhabitants it is the seventh largest city in Spain. The cost of living is not expensive and the city has much to offer in culture and tourism. Its squares and terraces make it a peaceful and friendly city for students.

Murcia is synonymous with sun and warm weather and is one of the cities of Europe that enjoys most hours of sunlight. Its mild climate – the average temperature is 20ºC – means that the many beaches and coves along its 252 kilometers of coastline as well as its mountains can be enjoyed all year round. The wealth of fresh produce in our area has given rise to our varied and seductive gastronomy, which offers meats, fish, vegetables and fruits, cooked and prepared in seemingly limitless manners.

Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz can all count their histories in millennia, and their historical and artistic heritage is rather special. A visit to these populations is a journey through time in which you will drink in their traditions and the living legacy that surrounds you.

A university of over a hundred years’ standing, yet always strategically poised to move with the times

The University of Murcia (UMU) is an international institution with over a hundred years behind it, although its origins can be traced back to the 12th century. Today, it is home to more than 30,000 students (2,000 of them from abroad), 3,000 researchers and lecturers, and an administration force counting 1,200.

The UMU is a reference for Higher Education in southeast Spain. At the same time it is a driving force in society in the Mediterranean Basin thanks to its Campus de Excelencia Internacional Mare Nostrum (CMN).

International students rank the University of Murcia among the very best universities in Europe, while of the 83 Spanish universities, it is one of only 21 to figure simultaneously in the three most important world rankings: ARWU, THE and QS.

A university that is open to the world with over 2,000 students on international mobility programs

The UMU has students of more than 50 nationalities on its campuses, thanks to the Erasmus+ Program and specific agreements with universities in Latin America, North America, Africa and Asia.

Every year 2,000 people take part in our mobility programs, making the UMU the regional leader in internationalization and a key player in the Mediterranean area. It is a port not only to Europe but to the rest of the world.
