MULTICOM is the first master’s degree in the data science of human multimodal communication. The program focuses on the connection between language, thought, and the different modalities of communicative behavior: gesture, gaze, facial expression, pose, speech articulation, prosody, and more.

MULTICOM integrates humanities, multimodality, data science, and technology. Along with the relevant theories, methods, and statistical and computational techniques, students are trained to combine and influence the key technologies in multimodal data science, such as large language models, body pose detection, automatic speech analysis, eye tracking, motion capture, or articulography. While candidates are expected to have a strong background in language and related disciplines, only basic quantitative skills are required for admission.

MULTICOM is an Erasmus Mundus joint degree, co-funded by the European Union and co-awarded by the universities of Murcia (Daedalus Lab) in Spain, Lund (Humanities Lab) in Sweden, and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Big-Data Linguistics) in Germany.

We have a growing list of associated partners collaborating in teaching, supervision, internships, and training events: the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Netherlands-Germany), Tobii (Sweden), Qualisys (Sweden), Fraunhofer IIS (Germany), The Red Hen Lab (international consortium), Radboud University (Netherlands), Case Western Reserve University (USA), University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), University of Warwick (UK).

A truly joint program

Murcia-Lund-FAU joint masters degree, accredited in Spain, Sweden, and Germany, resulting in diploma from the three universities, recognized in all three countries

Taught fully in English. Opportunities to learn Spanish, Swedish, and German

Two years (120 ECTS), in four terms:

  • Term 1: Introduction to multimodal data science. Murcia, Spain
  • Term 2: The multimodality lab: cognition and learning. Lund, Sweden
  • Term 3: Machine learning and multimodal corpora. Erlangen, Germany
  • Term 4: Thesis and professional development in academia and/or industry. Anywhere in the world.

Other key components:

  • Internship (5 ECTS)
  • International professional fair
  • Student-organized conference
  • International alumni network
  • Social and networking program

MULTICOM is a full-time taught MA, with a very strong research component. We do not currently offer part-time, online, or hybrid options, or programs taught in languages other than English, or courses tailored for professionals with a busy schedule. If you are highly qualified but would need a different version of MULTICOM, talk to us.

Application

Application will open in the fall 2025 until March 2026

Are you intrigued by the study of language and communication in their full complexity? Are you enthusiastic about becoming part of a novel, interdisciplinary field and its international community?

Do you have an excellent command of English, an outstanding background in language, communication, and thought (academic or professional qualifications), and a basic or intermediate quantitative background? Then consider applying. Financial support available.

Candidates with disabilities or special needs are encouraged to apply. They will be selected according to the same criteria, based on merit and international diversity. They will receive additional support tailored to their needs, from admission to graduation.

Faculty

Our faculty mainly consists of world-leading experts in multimodal data science from the Daedalus Lab at the University of Murcia, the Humanities Lab at the University of Lund, and the Big-Data Linguistics Chair at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg.

As guest faculty, we invite top-level researchers and professionals from universities, research institutes, and companies around the world.

Partners

MULTICOM associated partners are the world-leaders in multimodal data science, across academia, industry, policy, and society. They provide endless opportunities for training, research, and networking at organizations with a great variety of profiles.

Professional projects or internships will typically take place at one of the non-academic partners, although stays at academic partners will also be possible, if the project develops problem-solving skills applicable to non-academic settings. Students can also make their own proposals for host organizations.

Students and alumni

MULTICOM students are selected for their potential to become world leaders in some of the many disciplines intersecting with multimodal data science. Their written skills in English are excellent and their oral skills are even better. They have a strong background in language, communication, and thought, along with at least an elementary initiation into the world of data. They show outstanding capacities for leadership, commitment, autonomy, and motivation. They possess the resilience and versatility to thrive in an international and interdisciplinary environment.

The MULTICOM alumni network will provide additional mentoring for students and life-long training opportunities for graduates

Costs and financial aid

Most MULTICOM students will be receiving Erasmus Mundus scholarships, fully or partially covering the costs of the program. Financial aid applications are filed separately and do not affect candidate evaluation. Fully self-funded students and students receiving financial support are selected through the same competitive process and according to the same criteria, exclusively based on merit and international diversity.

Fully self-funding students will pay fees according to public prices, to be established by agreement of the three degree-awarding institutions and revised on a yearly basis. Our current fee estimation is 12000€ per year, 24000€ for the full program.
